EMS body sculpting and CoolSculpting are often shopped as if they were competing versions of the same thing, and they are not: one works on muscle, the other on fat cells, and only one of them is what we actually offer. Add AirSculpt, VASER and liposuction to the list and you are comparing a non-invasive treatment to surgery. Before you book anything, it is worth knowing which category you are actually in — so this article lays out what each does, says plainly which ones we do not provide, and gives current pricing for what we do. Our body contouring Montreal page covers our own menu in full.

“Knowing which category a treatment belongs to saves more money than any promotion.”The IPL Lab body-sculpting philosophy

✦ The short answer

EMS works on muscle, not fat. It drives intense involuntary muscle contractions to improve tone and definition — it is not a fat-removal device and not a weight-loss treatment. CoolSculpting (cryolipolysis) targets fat cells by cooling them; we do not offer it. AirSculpt, VASER and liposuction are surgical procedures performed by physicians; we do not offer those either. At IPL Lab you can book EMS body contouring from $120 per session (1 zone, 3-pack) down to $70 in a 10-pack, plus massage-based options for the appearance of cellulite. None of it replaces diet and exercise.

What this article covers

What does EMS body sculpting actually do?

EMS stands for electrical muscle stimulation. The applicator sits on the skin and triggers involuntary muscle contractions far more intense and far more frequent than you could produce voluntarily — the usual framing is thousands of contractions in a session lasting under half an hour. The target tissue is muscle. The intended outcome is better tone and definition in a specific zone, which is why it is bought by zone rather than as a whole-body treatment.

💪

What it targets

Muscle tissue in the treated zone — abdomen, glutes, arms or thighs. Definition and firmness, not circumference from fat loss.

🚫

What it is not

Not a fat-removal device, not a weight-loss programme, and not a substitute for training. Anyone selling it as any of those is overselling it.

The session

Non-invasive, no needles, no downtime. You stay clothed in the untreated areas and can go straight back to your day — muscles may feel worked, like after training.

🎯

Who it suits

People already reasonably close to their goal who want definition in a stubborn zone — not people looking for a starting point for significant weight change.

What is CoolSculpting — and do you offer it?

No, we do not offer CoolSculpting, and it is better that you hear that here than after a phone call. CoolSculpting is a brand name for cryolipolysis: controlled cooling applied to a fat layer, on the principle that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than surrounding tissue, with the body clearing the affected cells over the following weeks. It is a fat-layer treatment, which makes it a fundamentally different proposition from EMS.

If cryolipolysis is specifically what you want, you need a clinic that has the device — we would rather point you elsewhere than sell you six EMS sessions for a goal EMS does not address. Where the two get confused is in the marketing language: “body sculpting” and “body contouring” are umbrella terms that cover both categories, so the device name matters more than the category name when you are comparing quotes.

AirSculpt, VASER, liposuction — where does the line fall?

These belong in a third category entirely: they are surgical or minimally invasive medical procedures, performed by physicians, involving anaesthetic and recovery time. We do not offer them, and neither does any medispa operating within its scope. Here is the honest comparison:

EMS body contouring Cryolipolysis Surgical (AirSculpt, VASER, lipo)
Targets Muscle Fat cells Fat, removed physically
Invasive No No Yes
Performed by Trained technician Trained technician Physician / surgeon
Downtime None Minimal Real recovery period
Offered at IPL Lab Yes No No

The practical takeaway: if your goal is removing a fat deposit, non-invasive treatments of any kind will disappoint you relative to surgery, and an honest clinic will say so. If your goal is tone and definition in a zone you are already working on, EMS is a reasonable tool.

Which body zones can EMS sculpting treat?

EMS is applied zone by zone rather than to the whole body, which is why packages are priced by zone count. A zone is a defined treatment area, and the applicator is positioned over the muscle group you are targeting.

🫃

Abdomen

The most requested zone, and the one people most often mistake for a fat treatment. What changes is core definition.

🍑

Glutes

Commonly paired with abdomen as a two-zone package, since the two are usually trained together anyway.

💪

Arms

A smaller zone, often chosen by people who already train and want definition in a specific spot.

🦵

Thighs

Frequently combined with glutes. Ask at consultation which pairing makes sense for what you are actually trying to change.

One practical point when comparing clinics: ask what equipment is in the room and how the technicians were trained on it. Muscle-stimulation devices vary widely in output, and the answer tells you more than any category name in an advertisement.

What about cellulite?

Different problem, different answer. Cellulite is a structural feature of how fat, connective tissue and skin interact — it occurs in people at every body weight, and no treatment currently eliminates it permanently. What treatments can do is temporarily improve how it looks, mainly through circulation, lymphatic movement and skin quality.

At IPL Lab that means massage-based approaches rather than a device promising to erase it: anti-cellulite massage, and lymphatic drainage massage where fluid retention and heaviness are part of the picture. Results are cumulative and maintained rather than permanent, and we will tell you that up front. Be sceptical of any clinic that promises cellulite removal — the honest claim is appearance, not elimination.

How many sessions, and what do results actually look like?

EMS is sold in packages because a single session does not change anything durable — the same logic as training. A realistic progression:

Session 1: the treated muscle feels worked, sometimes for a day or two. Nothing visible yet — this is a sensation, not a result.
Sessions 2–4: most people report the zone feeling firmer before it looks different. Keep training and eating as you were, so you can attribute changes accurately.
Sessions 5–10: the window where definition changes become fair to judge. A 3-pack is a trial; a 6 or 10-pack is what a real course looks like.
After: muscle tone is maintained, not banked. Without ongoing sessions or your own training, it drifts back — the same as stopping any strength work.

We do not publish before-and-after weight figures, and we will not promise you a dress size. Zone-specific tone is what this treatment does; anything beyond that would be a claim we cannot stand behind.

Who should not book EMS?

Implanted electrical devices
A pacemaker, defibrillator, implanted pump or neurostimulator rules this out. Electrical stimulation and implanted electronics do not mix — tell us at booking.
Metal implants in the treatment zone
Metal hardware in or near the area needs discussion before treatment. Elsewhere in the body is usually a different conversation.
Pregnancy
We postpone. There is no urgency here that outweighs waiting.
Epilepsy, hernia in the zone, or recent surgery
Each of these needs a physician’s view first. A hernia in the treatment area is a clear contraindication.
If your goal is weight loss
Then this is the wrong treatment and we will say so. EMS does not remove fat. Start with the things that actually change body composition, and consider EMS later for definition.

Two practical notes. A 3-pack is genuinely a trial rather than a course, so if you are deciding between three sessions and none, three will tell you whether you like the treatment but not much about results. And body contouring is cosmetic, so it is not covered by RAMQ or private insurance. Members save further through our membership program.

What makes body sculpting at IPL Lab different?

Mainly that we tell you which category your goal belongs to before selling you anything in it. If you want fat removed, we will say EMS is not that and point you toward a clinic or physician who can help. If you want tone in a specific zone, you get a technician trained on the platform, zone selection based on what you are actually trying to change, and progress documented across the course instead of a vague promise. You will find us at our medispa in Montréal’s Plateau and our medispa in Laval, and the consultation costs nothing.
