Most men come in for one reason: they are tired of shaving. Not the face — the chest, the back, the shoulders, the intimate areas that razors handle badly and wax handles painfully. The honest answer is that you have two permanent-ish routes, and they are not interchangeable: laser for dark hair over large areas, and electrolysis for the white, grey and blonde hairs a laser physically cannot see. Everything else on this page — massage, back treatments, sculpting, a facial that is not a “spa day” — exists because grooming is rarely the only thing men want fixed.
“Wax rips, razors return, and a laser ignores white hair. Knowing which of the three applies to your hair is the whole decision.”The IPL Lab men’s grooming philosophy
✦ The short answer
Laser suits dark hair on chest, back, shoulders and intimate zones — permanent reduction, not removal, over 6–8 sessions. Electrolysis is the only method that permanently removes white, grey, blonde and red hair, priced by time from $112. Waxing and shaving stay temporary forever. Add-ons men actually book: deep tissue and lymphatic massage, back acne treatment, EMS sculpting and an anti-stress facial.
Men usually arrive having cycled through the first two for years. It helps to be blunt about what each actually delivers, because the marketing around all three is poor.
🪒
Free, immediate, and permanent only in the sense that you will do it forever. On the back it is impractical alone, and on the chest and intimate areas it drives ingrown hairs and razor burn.
😖
Four to six weeks of smoothness, bought with real pain and a regrowth phase you have to tolerate before the next appointment. It also requires letting hair grow out first — the part most men quit over.
✅
A course of sessions, then years of very little. Laser gives permanent reduction on dark hair; electrolysis permanently removes individual hairs regardless of colour. Both are a project, not an appointment.
Laser targets the pigment in the hair. Male body hair is often exactly what it likes — coarse, dark and dense across the chest, back, shoulders and abdomen. Expect roughly 70–90% reduction across a full course of six to eight sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on the area. What remains typically grows back finer and lighter, and most men top up once a year or so.
Two honest limits. It is permanent reduction, not removal — anyone promising a permanently bare back after one package is overselling. And it cannot treat hair it cannot see, which is the entire reason the next section exists. Our laser hair removal for men page covers the zone-by-zone detail and pricing.
Electrolysis treats one follicle at a time with a fine probe and a current that destroys the growth centre. It is slower and it is priced by the minute rather than by the zone — but it is the only method recognised as permanent hair removal rather than reduction, and crucially it does not care what colour the hair is.
That makes it the answer for the cases laser cannot touch: white and grey hairs (increasingly common with age, and the reason men in their forties get told laser “stopped working”), blonde and red hair, stray hairs on the ears and nose bridge, eyebrow shaping, and finishing off the handful of survivors after a full laser course. Many men end up doing both in sequence: laser for the bulk, electrolysis for the remainder.
The zones men ask about are the ones that are hardest to self-manage. Backs and shoulders top the list because they are unreachable. Chest and abdomen come next, usually with a request to thin rather than clear — a common and entirely reasonable ask, since a laser course can be stopped at “less” instead of “none”.
Intimate grooming is the quietest and most frequent request we get. It is a standard treatment here, handled with private rooms and technicians who do it daily. The practical advantage over shaving is the end of the two-day itch phase; over waxing, the end of the regrowth wait.
If you shave your neck and get bumps that never fully clear, hair removal is not a cosmetic decision — it is the fix for the cause. Coarse hair curling back into the skin is what produces those bumps, and reducing the density of that hair reduces the problem. Men with this pattern often see the biggest quality-of-life change of anyone we treat.
Two cautions we will raise at consultation. Active, inflamed lesions get treated or settled first — we do not fire a laser into an angry area. And if what you have is folliculitis or a keloidal pattern rather than simple ingrowns, that is a physician’s assessment before ours; the American Academy of Dermatology’s guidance on cosmetic treatment safety is a reasonable starting point on when to seek that.
Two routes, priced differently on purpose: laser by zone, electrolysis by time. Current pricing at both clinics, confirmed at your free consultation.

Back hair and back acne arrive together often enough that treating one without the other is a wasted trip. Body acne is coarser skin, more sebum and more friction than the face, and it responds to a different protocol — dermabrasion and targeted treatment rather than a facial. If yours is inflamed and widespread, our acne treatment program is the better starting point.

This is the section men book without telling anyone. Deep tissue massage for training loads and desk-bound shoulders; lymphatic drainage for heaviness and recovery; infrared and red light for warmth and post-workout comfort. Our lymphatic drainage massage page explains what that one does and does not do.
EMS sculpting sits here too, with a caveat we repeat often: it stimulates muscle contraction and can improve definition, but it is not weight loss and not a substitute for training. See body contouring for how we actually use it. We do not offer CoolSculpting, AirSculpt or any surgical procedure.

Men who have never had a facial usually expect cucumber slices. What they get is a cleanse, extractions, and something for the specific problem — shine, congestion, dullness, or skin that has taken a decade of shaving and weather. The anti-stress version leans into the tension side, which is why it is the one most men rebook. Full menu on our facial page.

We run laser and electrolysis under one roof, so the recommendation follows your hair colour rather than the machine we happen to own — and when the answer is “laser will not work on those hairs,” you get told that at consultation instead of after three paid sessions. Private rooms, technicians who do intimate zones daily, and no assumption that you want a spa experience.
What we do not do: injectables, thread lifts, hair transplants or surgery. If your goal needs one of those, we will say so and point you elsewhere.
