Across Canada the field is largely unregulated — which is precisely the problem. In practice, employers and insurers set the real bar, and they ask for documented certification from a recognised training provider. A credible laser course runs 30–40 hours covering laser physics, skin typing, safety, consultation and hands-on practice, and costs roughly $1,200–$1,800. Injectables are a completely different matter and are restricted to medical professionals.

Is laser training legally required in Québec?
Not in the way most people assume. Québec has no single provincial licence titled “medical esthetician,” and no one regulatory body governs most medical-aesthetic roles. Cosmetic laser hair removal is not a reserved medical act the way injectables are, so there is no statutory course you must complete and no registry you must appear on before offering the service.
That is a description of the current landscape, not an endorsement of it. Reporting across Canada has found the field largely unregulated, with procedures performed by people who have had as little as an hour of instruction, and dermatologists treating burn injuries as a result. Rules may tighten — several provinces have moved further than Québec already.
No mandatory licence
No provincial permit or registration is required specifically to perform cosmetic laser hair reduction in Québec. Certification is voluntary in law — and expected in practice.
Injectables are different
Botulinum toxin and dermal fillers require a physician’s prescription and are administered by regulated medical professionals. Do not reason from lasers to needles — the rules diverge completely.
The real gatekeepers
Employers, landlords, equipment suppliers and above all insurers. They ask for documented training, and none of them care that the law does not.

If it isn’t required, why train at all?
Because a Class 4 laser is genuinely capable of hurting someone, and the failure modes are not subtle. The realistic risks of untrained operation are burns, blistering, permanent pigment change and scarring — and the people most likely to be harmed are those with deeper skin tones, because getting wavelength and fluence wrong on Fitzpatrick IV–VI is where inexperience shows fastest.
What do you need before you start?
Most credible laser programmes, including ours, expect some foundation in esthetics or a nursing credential rather than taking absolute beginners straight onto a Class 4 device. That said, eligibility depends on your background, and we would rather assess it properly than publish a rule that turns away someone who is actually ready.

1 · Laser theory and laser types
Wavelengths, chromophores, selective photothermolysis, and how diode, Alexandrite and Nd:YAG differ in practice — not just in the brochure.
2 · Skin types and anomalies
Fitzpatrick typing done properly, plus the pigmentary and vascular conditions that change your settings or rule out treatment entirely.
3 · Consultation and test session
History taking, contraindication screening, patch testing, documentation, and setting expectations you can actually deliver on.
4 · Safety protocols
Eye protection, controlled-area practice, skin cooling, endpoint recognition, and what to do when a treatment goes wrong.
5 · Practical techniques
Hands-on work on real equipment across different skin and hair types — handpiece technique, overlap, zone workflows and timing.
6 · Results and client care
Course planning across sessions, tracking progress, handling underperforming cases, and the client-communication side of the job.

How long does it take, and what’s the format?
Thirty hours is enough to reach competent supervised practice on hair-removal lasers specifically. It is not enough to make anyone an expert in every energy device, and we do not pretend otherwise.

The hands-on hours happen on clinic equipment. That is the part that cannot be compressed or moved online.

Which safety knowledge actually matters most?
If you retain only one module’s worth of content, make it this one. The FDA’s guidance on laser hair removal devices is worth reading alongside the course material, since it sets out what these systems are actually cleared to do. These are the failure points that produce real injuries.

What do insurers and employers actually ask for?
This is the practical answer to the legal question. Since the province doesn’t set the bar, these two do — and their requirements are usually stricter than anything in statute.
Documented certification
A certificate naming the provider, the hours and the modules covered. Verify with your own insurer what they will accept before you enrol anywhere — policies differ, and we would rather you check than assume.
Written protocols
Consultation forms, consent, contraindication screening, patch-test records and incident procedure. Insurers ask to see these more often than people expect.
Currency
Training from a decade ago on devices nobody uses now carries little weight. Refreshers matter, particularly when you change equipment.
